Geneviève McKenzie- Sioui

A woman of many talents, Geneviève McKenzie-Sioui is an author, composer, singer, television producer and host. Born in 1956 in Matimekush, near Schefferville, in northern Quebec, she left her homeland at 19 to study, and settled in the Wendake community near Quebec City. She began to write in the Innu language in the late 1970s, but did not start writing full-time until a decade later, first of all songwriting, producing her own shows in Quebec and in Europe. In 1999, she launched her first album, La Lune du Labrador, under the name “Shanipiap” (Genevieve in Innu). Afterwards, McKenzie-Sioui turned to new media. She founded les Productions Shanipiap and in 2003, became producer and host of a TV show for children, Les Découvertes de Shanipiap, broadcast on APTN, the Canadian Aboriginal Peoples’ TV network. Her songs are in Innu, but her literary work also involves experimental work in French.

Traditional culture remains McKenzie-Sioui’s main source of inspiration. Her aim is to build a bridge, a transition between the traditional way of life and today’s world while safeguarding traditional values and ancestral memory.
