Sam lives with his mother in the Anishnabe Native community
in the Abitibi region of Quebec. His girlfriend, Migona, a
student who lives in the Huron-Wendat community just outside
Québec City – is a 10-hour-drive away. Winter comes,
and the young Native man leaves home to visit his girlfriend.
Along the way, he meets Tania, a young Russian woman, and
decides to accompany her in her flight across a terrain devoid
of navigable roads. This road movie was largely shot on location
in the Anishnabe, Innu and Wendate communities of Quebec over
the course of a 2,500-kilometre-long journey.

On the cover: L'homme suivra, 1999, by Jacques Néwashish
Acrylic on canvas (40 x 60)
A painter and graphic artist, Jacques Néwashish
also manages a traditional life site in Coucoucahe in the
Upper St-Maurice Valley. His work is filled with an intelligent
attention to beings and the land. Through his art and his
involvement with his people, this sensitive, committed creator
remains a man who still has the freedom to breathe to the
rhythm of the earth.
O, Mother Earth
O, Father Sky
Weave garments of great clarity for us
So that we may walk
Where the birds sing
Where the grass is green
Tewa Poem

A drum beats. An ancient voice takes up a chant. And the
voice knows other voices will come; that the river of dreams
that express themselves out loud will grow and that one spring
day, a mighty torrent will thunder.
A moccasin is posed on the ground; a dance step is traced.
And the walker knows that other paths will open, that other
travellers will have felt the call and soon the guests sharing
a feast from the same dish will arrive on the welcoming shore.
A child is born. Then soon, a new voice will take up the
melody of the old chants. More steps will hammer the generous
earth and the dream will grow.
Nations are reborn in the full light of day, on the strength
of traditions and youth. Spring throws itself madly into the
arms of summer.
Everyone in Montreal for the celebration!
